Halloween Costume Contest: If you come to school dressed in your halloween costume on Monday, be sure to have your picture taken by Mr. Santiago (upstairs) to enter in the costume contest. Remember, no masks. Pumpkin Decorating Contest: Decorate a pumpkin at home and bring it into school to compete for a prize! If you plan on participating in this contest, sign up on the easel in the Ag Lobby by 10/28. IMAGE Training: This is a workshop open to upperclassmen (Sophomore, Junior, Senior). Please let me know if you are interested in being the Wildlife Biology representative. Essentially you must have interested in developing your leadership abilities and a desire to be involved in our FFA chapter. There will be a form to fill out for participants identifying that they understand it costs our FFA chapter $26 for each person we send. Any students that back out of the training will be responsible for reimbursing that $26. All students who attend will be paid for (yay FFA dues). ClassroomLab Animals: After caring for the Gecko, Baloo, please update the chore chart so we can maintain accurate records. You can access it via the QR code below or by clicking the link. If you have extra time during study hall or need community service/SAE hours, please check out the To Do list for some things that need to be done in Wildlife Bio. College Visit: Green Mountain College will be visiting on October 26th during period 4. Common Units: The freshmen FFA unit will end October 27th. The Job Interview unit will end October 25th. Riffle Bioassessment for Volunteers (RBV): Becky Mortorelli, a volunteer from the Quinnipiac River Watershed Association came to lead a RBV workshop for our sophomores. Students were able to collect macroinvertebrates from Wharton Brook (on campus). CIPWG Symposium: Four juniors attended the Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group Symposium on Tuesday. Students attended workshops on invasive plants and pollinators and visited with professionals in the natural resource and plant science industry. We even got a nice shout out from Dianne Saunders for our help with the plantings and other habitat management projects with the Wallingford Conservation Commission. We are lucky to have such a supportive resource in our town! Environmental Science: Students in the Environmental Science class (UConn ECE NRE1000) visited Brookfield (Greenbacker's) Farm this week to learn about local ag production techniques. Ok... and to visit some cute cows too! Check out the pictures in the video below! SAEEmerging Ag Trends: Do you like to use technology like Apps? Well then why don't you create one?! Create an app using ArcGIS for landowners to be able to map and monitor the invasive plants on their specific piece of property. This is a long term project and is something that is actually needed in the natural resource industry. Check out these similar apps to get started: EDDMapS and IPANE. Unpaid Experiential Learning Program: A new program has been established at the state that allows students who are 16 to work (unpaid) at a business (or for a private citizen) for 120 hours per year. There is an application that needs to be filled out. This is great news for a lot of you in regards to SAE. Please let me know if you have a business in mind. SAEKestrel Nesting Box Kiosk: A recent graduate is looking for help putting the finishing touches on a project he completed for his Eagle Scout project. He is looking for someone to create a poster to be put up on the kiosk at a kestrel nesting box site, Farnum Field in Wallingford. "What I would want on it is some basic information about the field, who runs it (the town of Wallingford and the Wallingford Land Trust), some information about the bird, and basic stuff like diet, range, and physical description.
