ClassNRCA Office Hours Presentation: During the next office hours block, 1/11, Laura Cicneros from UConn's Natural Resource Conservation Academy will be presenting in the Ag Community room. We have had six students participate in NRCA over the years and I strongly encourage it! It makes a great SAE project and an excellent way to gain experience in the Natural Resource industry. Check out their Facebook page and website. Program descriptions and photos of NRCA are below: Natural Resources Conservation Academy (NRCA) The NRCA is a great program for high school students (grades 9 to 11) that are interested in the environment or science. Through a week-long field experience at UConn and an individual community conservation project, the NRCA engages high school students in a fun and exciting way to natural resource science and conservation biology through experiential, place-based learning (learn more at http://nrca.uconn.edu/). The NRCA will be entering into its sixth year of programming and was awarded the 2016 Maria Pirie Environmental Education Program Award from the New England Environmental Education Alliance. Conservation & Geospatial Bootcamp Beginning summer 2016, faculty from UConn’s Center for Land Use Education & Research and Departments of Natural Resources & Environment and Education will be running multiple 2-day workshops for high school students and adult learners. Bootcamps will introduce participants to innovative, user-friendly geospatial technology that can be utilized to study and address local conservation issues. Freshmen FFA Unit Test Retakes: Mrs. Rose has rescheduled the FFA Unit retake test for 12/20 during period 1. You have to score 80% or higher on the FFA Unit test in order to be eligible for the FFA Greenhand degree. FFAFFA Committee Meetings: 11/29 is the next day for FFA Committee meetings. It's never too late to join a committee! Talk to the FFA chapter officers to see what committees are currently running. FFA Chapter Meeting: Our next FFA chapter meeting will be on December 13th in the Ag Community room. The theme is "treats and toys for the shelter." Stay tuned for more information from the officer team. 8th Grade Open House: There is still time to sign up to help at Open House if you are interested in talking to interested 8th graders and their parents about Wildlife Biology. Volunteers should plan to be here on at 5:30 ish (or you can stay at school and eat pizza) on Thursday December 1st. Pease sign up here if you haven't already. SAESAE Grades: 11/30 marks the end Quarter 2 for SAE. Make sure you are up to date in AET and have submitted your SAE photo on Google Classroom. ClassFreshmen: We have been busy visiting a variety of habitats in our area lately. We've stopped by Lighthouse point to get a glimpse of a saltwater and shoreline habitat, freshwater at McKenzie Reservoir and Hanover Pond, field/meadow and forest at Tyler's Mill, wetlands at the Wallingford Community Garden, riparian and saltmarsh on the Quinnipiac River. Sophomores: Did you know that not all animals are able to occupy all areas of a lake? Students are learning about which critters live in different zones. Sophomores will be switching to the Worksafe Unit with Mrs. Rose on December 5th. Juniors: After creating some incredible products in our fast Forest Management unit, juniors will be testing their skills in "The Forestry Games" next week. Some events include orienteering (compass work), general knowledge and tree measurement. Seniors: Did you know we are currently in a drought? Our seniors do. They also can tell you about some of the issues our environment faces in regards to water quality and availability. We have been touring different water bodies with different issues. See the current state of Hanover Pond in the images below while the pond is drained for the installation of hydropower equipment. Next week we are in the field testing their hypothesis on amount of road salts in water bodies in relation to the proximity of major roads. FFAENR/Envirothon: The next ENR practice has been moved to 11/22 (Tuesday). The ENR CDE competition will be held at UConn on May 12th (the last day of AP testing...). Zach Blum is the chair of the ENR CDE. We are still looking for someone to chair the Envirothon team. Envirothon's competition will be in May also, most likely after the end of AP testing. The two teams will work together and will overlap, however some of the content is different and will require some some separate planning considerations/time. Agri Science Fair: Agri Science is not only a type of SAE, but also a competition in FFA. If you are interested in researching, carrying out an experiment and creating a poster displaying your research then check out this CDE. This can be an individual or team event. Learn more on the state ag teachers website or on the National FFA website. If you are interested, email Mrs. Picard. National FFA Scholarships: The scholarship award application is now open on the National FFA website. Forestry CDE Competition: Four students participated in the CT FFA Forestry CDE today, Kailee Puzzo, Courtney Nixon, Zach Blum and Ian Dorsey. Student's competed in a variety of forestry related events including general knowledge, equipment identification, tree measurements, chainsaw parts and trouble shooting, and map interpretation. Our team placed 7th in the state! The contest was hosted by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station's Forestry and Horticulture department staff and held at their research facility, Lockwood Farm, in Hamden. IMAGE Leadership Workshop: CaseyLynn Federico, Hayley Gibbs, Ian Dorsey and Zach Blum (in addition to other Ag Science students) have been nominated to attend the IMAGE leadership workshop on Monday. The students will meet other FFA members from around the state and develop leadership skills they can bring back to the chapter. Holiday Plant Sale: Please support our FFA chapter by stopping by our Holiday Plant Sale hosted by our Plant Science students for your holiday decorations. See the flyer below for more information. SAESAE Grades: 11/30 marks the end Quarter 2 for SAE. Make sure you are up to date in AET and have submitted your SAE photo on Google Classroom. In need of some additional SAE hours to wrap up your Quarter 2 SAE grade (SAE for Q2 ends 11/30). Here are some last minute ideas:

Please be prepared as scoring an 80% or higher is a prerequisite for earning the Greenhand Degree. Update AET: Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors, please make sure your AET is up to date. September 1st - November 30th make up your SAE grade for Q2. SAEGIS (Emerging Agricultural Trends): Interested in learning more about Geographic Information Systems (GIS)? I have two workbooks that were given to us to pilot. Essentially, I'm looking for someone (or multiple students) to use the text to work through some GIS exercises and see if it is something we could use in class. Experience in GIS is essential to those looking to pursue a career in natural resources (along with many other careers) and this is a great way to dive into the content. The software that goes along with the text is available in our classroom, so work would need to be completed at school (study hall, office hours, after school). This opportunity could also be made an independent study. Please email me if you are interested.
