Forestry CDE: This year's forestry team was made up of freshmen Mikayla Higgins, Michael Lowit, Autumn Murray and junior Nick Motmans. Nick coached the team throughout the fall, spending many afternoons either in the woods or in the classroom teaching many eager freshmen about forestry. Freshmen Paige Walden was also a big part of the forestry team, attending almost all practices! The team competed in tree identification, equipment identification, forest disorders, tree measurements, general forestry knowledge, and tree stand improvement. The team placed 6th in the state, and Nick Motmans scored 3rd place individual. I can't decide what's more impressive, Nick's stellar placing (beating out two of the competitors on the winning team) or the fact that our team TIED the winning team in the hardest component of the contest, tree stand improvement. The team has caught the competitive bug and is intent on winning next year. If their level of dedication keeps up into next fall, I think they certainly can! If you are interested in joining the forestry practices to earn your shot at a place on the 2018 forestry CDE team, join us on Tuesday for our first practice of the 2018 competition year!
